Three of Nigeria’s four representative on the continent will begin action this weekend.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, 2023 Federation Cup winners Bendel Insurance kick off on Saturday in Benin. They host Algerian Cup winners ASO Chlef by 4pm local time. Winner of the tie would face RS Berkane of Morocco.
Bendel Insurance last featured on the continent in the 2005 CAF Confederation Cup where they exited in the second round. They won the defunct CAF Cup in 1994 and reached the semi finals of the CAF Champions League (1980) and CAF Cup Winners Cup (1979).
Rivers United received a bye to the second round of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup. They would face the winner of Casa Sport (SEN) vs EF Ouagadougou (BKF) in September.
On Sunday, NPFL champions Enyimba FC face Al Ahly Benghazi of Libya while Remo Stars are guests to Medeama SC of Ghana in the CAF Champions League. Al Ahly Benghazi were runner-ups in the 2022/23 Libyan league while Medeama SC are champions of the Ghanian League.
Enyimba FC are 2-time winners of the CAF Champions League (2003 & 2004). Their last action on the continent was a 2-0 win over Al-Ittihad in Aba during the playoff round of the 2021/22 CAF Confederation Cup. They missed the return leg and thus couldn’t progress to the group stage. With no route to the CAFCC, Enyimba will have to focus on the competition.
Remo Stars are on the continent for the 2nd time. They are yet to win a tie on the continent. Can they replicate Enyimba’s 2nd season success?
The CAF Champions League matches involving Nigerian clubs will be played by 4pm Nigerian time.
