After what looks like ages, the football fans in Nigeria would have their beloved Nigeria Professional Football League back with the beginning of the 2016/17 season.

Since October 2, 2016 when Rangers defeated El-kanemi Warriors 4-0 at the Cathedral to break their 32 year jinx of not winning the league title, the league have been on break waiting for this day.

Yes, we were served with the Federation Cup final, the Super Four and the Charity Cup but none beats the vibes from the NPFL. 20 teams will battle to emerge champion where 4 will be relegated.

There will be no Giwa FC to make us 19. There will be a lot of games in quick succession. The clubs will need to dig deep to get the results needed to finish in the top three at least. The top three is guaranteed a place on the continent in 2018.

Today, it begins in Kano. Kano Pillars will host Federation Cup champions, FC IfeanyiUbah by 4pm at the Sank Abacha Stadium. Expect the stadium to be filled to the brim.

Other matches for the first match day will be played on Sunday and they include an Oriental derby between Rangers and Abia Warriors in Enugu. Enyimba will host Sunshine Stars in Calabar. You can find the full fixtures on the attached picture.

We wish the 20 teams the best of campaign in the new season. Let the best team be champions. Let the best team be Enyimba.

Cheers.
