Away from the Premier League and the trolls to LLLchester United, the heat in the Nigeria Professional Football League is on with results of Matchday 36.

It was a Super Sunday yesterday with all of the top 6 teams playing against themselves. Rivers United (1) travelled to Bauchi and needed to defeat Wikki Tourists (4) to remain on top of the NPFL. Rangers (2) hosted Sunshine Stars of Akure (6) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. FC IfeanyiUbah (3) needed to defeat Lobi Stars (5) to mount another challenge for the title.

A brace from Bobby Clement dimmed the Sunlight from Akure as the Flying Antelopes defeated Sunshine Stars 2-0. Rangers needed a penalty save from Ghanaian import Nana Bonsuh in the first half to keep their title hopes alive. It has been 32 years since they last won the title. Unless something miraculous happens, the title should return to Enugu after all these years.

Rivers United could not keep Wikki Tourists as they lost 1-0. Lobi Stars defeated FC IfeanyiUbah 2-1 to dent the hopes of the team with so much Petrol-Naira.

The matchday marked the end of Enyimba’s reign as defending champions. Enyimba fired blanks against battling MFM FC. The Elephants have two more games to play but are now 7 points behind Rangers. The prospect of continental football cannot be gotten on the log for the 7 time champions as they would hope to win the Federation Cup to participate in the Confederation Cup next year.

The late fairytale from Ikorodu United ended in Jos as Kelechi John’s first half goal for Plateau United inflicted Ikorodu’s first defeat in 6 games. The Oga Boys as they are called had defeated heartland in Owerri, Kano Pillars and Enyimba in Abeokuta. They will now return to the NNL having spent just a season in the NPFL.

Abia Warriors got three points against Nasarawa United with a 2-1 win. Warri Wolves pipped Shooting Stars 1-0 in Warri. Who will join Ikorodu United and Giwa FC in the NNL?

That was my NPFL Sunday. A new champion will emerge. It will go down to the wire. My money is on Rangers – The Flying Antelopes.

As for Arsenal, the Lord awaits thee at the Forest.
