The Super Falcons post-AWCON saga took the nation by storm. It was on every tabloid, on every talk-show and everybody was having a go at the NFF and the Sports Ministry and associates. As reported, it required the intervention of the presidency after the victorious Falcons matched on the streets of Abuja.

The 2015/16 Nigerian Professional Football League is done and dusted for over three months and a new season begins within 3 weeks. The 2016 Nigeria National League is over and completed with the Super4 where Katsina United emerged Champions. What about our topmost women league in the country? Who is the champion of 2016?

Somewhere along the line, we have left the ladies aside and the Nigeria Women Premier League is yet to be concluded. Divided into 2 groups, the NWPL started in May 2016 after a 3 months delay. There were various expulsions for teams that failed to honour three consecutive matches but the League Management Company (LMC) intervened with 10 million Naira and thus the clubs were reinstated.

Nasarawa Amazons are winners of group A and Rivers United are winners of group B but no one knows when a winner will be declared. Will it be in 2017? The Women Federation Cup has been concluded months ago but Nasarawa Amazons and Rivers United are waiting. How long will they wait? Are their players still in camp?

Too many times I wish we can have something like the LMC for the women league or maybe the LMC can support them. I don’t know much about their finances and welfare but I am eagerly waiting for the winner of 2016 NWPL. Will it be a double for Rivers United or will Nasarawa Amazons avenge their 1-0 semifinal loss to Rivers United by clinching the title?

No one knows till the play-off is done. Till then, keep hoping that things turn the right corner. The Super Falcons may have received bank alerts but Women football in Nigeria is on a slide. We need to arrest the slide ASAP.
