Arsenal completed their Australia pre-season tour with a 3-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday with goals from Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey and Mohammed Elneny.
Nacho Monreal grabbed a pair of assists. The first was a cut back converted via a deft touch by Olivier Giroud which sailed graciously to the roof of the net. The second was an overhead through ball to Aaron Ramsey who finished with a lob. El neny added the third before the end of the half.
There was the matter of Alexis Sanchez’s comment translated to mean he intends to play the Champions League and the ball is in Arsenal’s court. With a year left on his contract, Arsenal needs to clarify his future. Will Wenger keep him till the end of his contract or sell him this summer? The latter option is dicey and Wenger will not want to sell to City. It is looking like Van Pierse all over.
In the NPFL, Sunshine Stars were brought down to earth from the lofty heights they attained the previous week. They lost 0-1 at home to visiting Nasarawa United a week after they trounced ABS 4-2 in Ilorin. Flipped. FC IfeanyiUbah won the Oriental Derby against Enyimba FC. There were home wins in all other centres except in Ilorin where Rivers United earned their first away point after 8 failed attempts.
Away from football, Roger Federer won his 19th grand slam with his 8th Wimbledon title. He didn’t drop a set in the tournament. He is the best sportsman ever. My role model. Hamilton, my favourite F1 driver, won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. His win cut Vettel’s championship lead to just a point.
There was also the little matter of the Star Sixes. Yakubu Aiyegbeni had a hand in every goal scored by the Nigerian team.
Finally, Winter is here.
