Arsenal begin their 2022/23 Premier League campaign with a trip to Crystal Palace later today. The Gunners have had an impressive pre-season which came to an end with the 6-0 drubbing of Sevilla FC in the Emirates Cup.
The Emirates Cup which was staged in honour of late Antonio Reyes saw a hat-trick from new boy – Gabriel Jesus; a brace from star boy – Bukayo Saka and the new #14 – Eddie Nketiah.
The 4-0 victory over Chelsea in the United States was assuring and if Arsenal can translate the pre-season form to the season, then they could challenge for honours. With Gabriel Jesus and Zinchenko brought in Manchester City as an upgrade to the previous team, the fans can dare to dream.
With Bernd Leno now with Fulham, Matt Turner will be Arsenal’s #2 goalie. Ramsdale has picked up the #1 jersey but Turner’s display in the preseason didn’t make me confident enough. Hopefully we have an injury-free Aaron in the season. Will Runnarsson be the #3 goalie?
To the London Derby, Arsenal failed to beat Crystal Palace last season. The first encounter ended 2-2 at the Emirates while the Gunners lost 3-0 in the return leg in April. That was Palace’s 5th win in 44 previous encounters against Arsenal. Fans should expect goals at Selhurst Park as there have been at least 2 goals scored in the last 10 meetings at Crystal Palace.
Expect Mikel Arteta to maintain the same starting XI that swept past Sevilla. I am not sure he would like to rush any of the injured quartet of Tierny, Veira, Smith Rowe and Tomiyasu to the starting XI. The gaffer confirmed that 3 of the 4 injured players would be involved tonight.
Possible line up: Ramsdale, Zinchenko, Gabriel, Saliba, White, Partey, Xhaka, Odegaard, Martinelli, Saka, Jesus. Prediction: Crystal Palace 0-2 Arsenal.
Off to cross the Ts on my FPL team.
