Spain and Portugal reached the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following victories over Austria and Croatia respectively. It was a UEFA match up in Los Angeles and Toronto yesterday.

Austria put up an early fight but a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and a goal from Pedro Poro gave Spain the 3-0 victory. Marc Cucurella assisted both goals for Oyarzabal.

In Toronto, it was not an easy ride for Portugal despite winning 2-1 over Croatia. Ivan Perisic opened the scoring in the 53rd minute but Portugal was awarded a penalty in the 66th minute after a VAR review. Ronaldo stepped up and converted his first ever goal in the knockout stage of the World Cup.

4 minutes into the added time, Goncalo Ramos scored the winner for Portugal. Croatia had the ball in the net after but the goal was chalked off upon another VAR review.

We should now see a lot of the Croats retiring with their exit from the World Cup. Ivan Perisic is 37. Luka Modric is 40. Andre Kramaric is 35.

Riyad Mahrez (35) called it quits with international football following Algeria’s 2-0 loss to Switzerland. Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scored the goals for Switzerland.

The last matches in the round of 32 will be played today. Australia take on Egypt while Argentina play Cabo Verde. The final match is between Colombia and Ghana.

Ghana, Cabo Verde and Egypt will be hoping to join Morocco in the round of 16 as the African representatives. Cabo Verde will want to maintain their unbeaten record in the World Cup. Can they usurp defending champions Argentina?

Predictions: Australia 1-1 Egypt, Argentina 2-0 Cabo Verde, Colombia 1-1 Ghana. Ghana & Egypt to progress on penalties.
