How much we waited for an Arsenal match, a real match. We hyped ourselves; we created pictures, painted scenes of glory, and expected goals galore. We were basking in Giroud’s ignition, Santi’s outside shots, Gervinho’s conversions, Podolski directness, Bould’s defence and the Arsenal resurgence.
Chelsea had spanked Norwich; so did Manchester United and even Liverpool that Arsenal beat at Anfield. Everyone expected the Arsenal to send the yellow and greens to the cleaners. Seeing Chelsea win spuds 4-2 and White hart lane, United beating Stoke with the same score line, City overturning the Baggies at the Hawthorn 2-1, there was only one thing the Red and White of North London needed to do: WIN.I predicted a 5-0 arsenal victory.
But, Arsene’s Army did what they have been characterized of doing: disappoint when the hope is high. How can Arsenal lose to Norwich who is yet to win a premier league game this season and have won only one match in 12 premier league matches? They slapped me with that lose and that flat footed display.
This is the worst play I have seen from arsenal in a long time. No clear-cut chance, lame shot on target, disjointed play, un-seriousness, no urgency, no drive, no purpose, and no ambition. They just came to answer “present” on the pitch. We didn’t play well enough to deserve even no point. If there are negative points in the league, we should be ascribed that for that half-hearted display.
You don’t spill passes to the path of your opponents. You don’t allow people take shot at your goal, you close them down. You don’t give strikers breathing space: you either marry them or keep them off uniformly. You don’t run forward to run back with the ball again. You don’t play like that when you are a goal down.
The team was woeful except Arteta and the flying jenk. Santi was trick-less and idealess. Giroud was ordinary, Podolski wasteful, Ramsey Unserious, Santos was just wasting my time. I missed Gibbs and Diaby. No coordination, no training or was it the sleeping pills given to England or what? Or was it jetlag to Carrow road?
Ruddy didn’t make any save; he was relaxed and was untested. We had numerous corners yet we couldn’t convert. BFG and Giroud are tall, Vermaleen jumps but no conversion. I think we need a corner kick coach, Bolton may help. Santi should stop taking those corner kicks. I prefer Arteta’s kicks.
After that match, I wished we had a fuller house. I wished for Rosicky, Wilshere, Scz, Diaby, and Walcott. They need to get well soon and we need a true striker, I can’t wait for Giroud. Arsenal is no grooming ground. No time.
So we are 10 points behind leaders Chelsea. We have a long way to go if we must catch up. I don’t see them slipping soonest with their winning mentality. Neither do I see City or United. We have played just about a quarter of the league. Let us wake up. Can’t we go on a 10 match winning streak?
On a lighter note, 17 year old German, Serge Gnabry made his Premeir League debut for arsenal in that weekend lose, Wilshere made the bench, and today is Wenger’s birthday. Happy Birthday Monsieur Arsene Wenger.
So we play Schalke next in the UEFA champions league in mid-week. Schalke won bundesliga champions Borrusia Dortmund 2-1 away in the weekend and would be eager to repeat that. I would not want that. Hope Koscienly, Gibbs et al would be fit for the match?
In Africa, Nigerian Sunshine Stars of Akure were knocked out of the CAF champions league by Egyptian giants 4-3 on aggregate. The first leg had ended in a pulsating 3-3 draw in ijebu-Ode, Nigeria but the Cairo boys pipped Sunshine 1-0 in Cairo without fans watching. Double disappointment for me at the weekend.
I am still glooming in the disappointments and I hope this midweek would be great. I love Arsenal till ever.
