For every Nigerian gooner, the weekend started on Friday with an FA cup match against Coventry City at the Emirates.
Bendtner returned to spearhead the Arsenal attack but it was the German contingent that broke the Skyblues before the half. Podolski scored a brace in the first half, assisted by compatriots Ozil and Metersacker sequentially.
The Arsenal had 4 Germans in the starting 11 unlike the French era (if you say so). Serge Gnabry being the 4th. Gedion Zelalem added to the German number as he made his long awaited debut, being the 1st gunner to feature for Arsenal that wasn’t born when Wenger took over at Highbury.
The gunners went on to demolish City with second half goals from Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla. Both were subbed in.
The game will sure improve the confidence of Podolski and ease his return from injury and thus scare their opponents. Southampton is next away.
On Saturday, Nigeria faced Morocco in the quarter finals of the CHAN 2014 in South Africa. This was my match of the week. It was almost similar to Reading 5-7 Arsenal.
The home based Super Eagles were swept away by 3 unreplied goals in the 1st half but rallied back to score 3 in the second half to bring the game to extra time. The 3rd goal was scored in the 90th minute just like Arsenal’s 4th at Reading.
In extra time, the AFCON 2013 champions made it 4-3 to the disbelief of many. It was a miracle but they are through to the semi finals scoring 12 goals in all.
Four unreplied goals from Arsenal, Four comback goals from Nigeria: ooh to be a Nigerian gooner.
Meanwhile, at the Abuja stadium, Enyimba defeated Bayelsa United 3-0 and Warri Wolves 2-0 in their 2nd game. Kano Pillars lost 2-0 to Warri Wolves but beat Bayelsa 2-1.
As for the English FA cup, Arsenal will host Liverpool while Manchester City will host Chelsea. Licking lips.
What a weekend.
