Saturday mornings are quite different from a morning on a working week day. It is morning of which you can afford to have an extra sleep, disable your alarm, have late breakfast and do the unusual.
Looking back at the week, Goal Line Technology assisted Swansea and Gomis as they came, set camp and grabbed all three points available at Ashburton Grove. Arsenal huffed and puffed but it was one of those days that the final product of a hard days work just refuses to produce the needed fruit. 2nd position for the North Londoners seems like a fairy tale now.
The second leg of the UEFA Champions League was the toast of the week with Bayern Munich crashing out despite beating Barcelona 3-2 in the Allianz Arena. The Bavarians were without key players like Robben and Ribbery, the Robbery gang. No one expected any magic from Pep Guardiola’s Machines as they tried to beat Barcelona to their own game in the first leg.
The game of potential and possible upset was in Madrid. The Italian army of Turin overcame the white aristocrats of Madrid and booked a place in a final that the Italian FA never expected. The final will be on the 6th of June but the Copa Italia Final is scheduled for 7th of June. O Ye of little faith.
Back to the game, Morata cancelled a dubious penalty scored by Penaldo. There is no better story than knocking out your former club especially if they felt you were not to their standards. Madrid may go trophy-less despite spending so much this season. The fans took out of Spurs’ Bale and the Welshman will rue the chances that he missed that Wednesday night.
So it is Barcelona vs Juventus in the UEFA Champions League Final and Sevilla vs Dnipro in the UEFA Europa Cup Final? Who will be crowned champions. Will Pirlo get his perfect swansong?
The Nigeria Federation Cup round of 64 kicked off on Wednesday and ended on Thursday with a couple of top flight teams biting the dust of cup sets and being kicked out by lesser and relatively unknown oppositions – the joy of a cup game. The full results can be gotten from nigerianfootballleague.com.
In other Nigeria round up, we have a new Nike kit – decent. Stephen Keshi has resumed his coaching duties after a long period of uncertainty. He has released a 26 man list to face Chad in the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifiers in Kaduna on June 13. Mfon Udoh, the reigning goal king is on the list and finally Chigozie Agbim have been excused from national duties and replaced by Akpeyi.
Warri Wolves have also traveled to Congo to face AC Leopard in the first leg of the CAF Confederation cup play-off. The only Nigerian team left in the continent will hope to make it to the group stage of the Confederation Cup. They will not partake in this weekend’s action in the increasingly exciting Glo Nigeria Premier League. Hoping for another batch of goals galore and away wins.
Back to London, Do you know that Arsenal have three world class goalies? Ask Wenger for more details. The Gunners will face Manchester United this weekend hoping to take all three points especially with the absence of Rooney, there Devilish nemesis.
The European season is rounding up but here in Nigeria, the heat is just beginning to be felt.
Have a nice footballing weekend.
