Top of the morning greetings to you from the city of Lagos. It is a new week and there is so much to talk about.
We begin with the NPFL:
An All Stars cast of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) players will embark on an international friendly tour of Spain as part of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the the League Management Company (LMC) and the Spanish Football League, LaLiga.
The NPFL All Stars team – more or less the home based Super Eagles – will be part of the pre-season activities of two Spanish Clubs, Valencia CF and Malaga CF on August 10, 12 and 13.
The NPFL All Stars team will be made up of the best players in the league this season and it will offer them the opportunity of showcasing their abilities and possibly secure offers from any European club as the match will be broadcast live on some European television channels – Shehu Dikko, LMC Chairman.
The good news was preceded by the 5-0 whitewashing of Abia Warriors by Kano Pillars on Sunday. FC IfeanyiUbah came from 2 goals down to salvage a draw in the last 10 minutes against Shooting Stars in Ibadan. Heartland ended their 8 match winless run. Plateau United proved that Wikki Tourists are human after all – They won 2-0.
At the Euros, Ozil missed a penalty but Germany went on to defeat Slovakia 3-0 with goals from Boateng, Gomez and Draxler. What does Muller have to do to have his name on the score sheet? Maybe he should have taken the missed penalty. He has an opportunity in the quarter final against Spain or Italy pending their encounter today.
Belgium saw off Hungary in a 4-0 whitewash while France needed a brace from Greizmann to defeat Ireland 2-1. England are favourites in their encounter against Iceland but I am hoping Lars Lagerback and his -son army pull out a shocker.
In the USA, Messi announced his retirement from international football after Argentina were defeated 4-2 on penalties in the Copa America final to Chile for the umpteenth time. The game ended goalless and had to be decided from the spot. Alexis Sanchez emerged the best player of the tournament and went home with the Golden Ball award.
Congratulations to Alexis and Chile. Take heart Leo.
