Super Falcons’ quest to record a group stage victory over the Black Queens of Ghana was dashed yesterday after they played out a 1-1 draw in their second group game in the ongoing Africa Women Cup of Nations. Before they met yesterday, the Black Queens were unbeaten in their last 3 group matches in the AWCON against Nigeria with a win and 2 draws.
Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring in the 19th minute but the defending champions failed to add to their tally after fluffing numerous chances in Limbe. The Black Queens levelled in the 43rd minute from the spot.
The second half had Nigeria knocking on Ghana’s doors but the Black Queens held on. Oshoala and Ordega missed chances to give Nigeria the lead but they fluffed their chances. Ghana also missed a couple of chances to turn the game in their favour. On the dot of regulation time, penalty appeals by Nigeria were waived away by the referee after Oshoala was upended in the box by the Ghanaian goalkeeper.
The Falcons remain top of Group B on goals difference from the Black Queens, and will play Kenya on Sunday while Ghana will play Mali.
