Hello, top of the morning to you. It is a Tuesday and it is becoming harder for me to post on Mondays for reasons well known to a new working day. Yesterday was a public holiday in Lagos but the powers that be had me working till evening.
So how did the weekend go? It promised to be an exciting weekend of football and it didn’t disappoint – at least from The Boys point of view. They came, they saw and they conquered. There was no better way for a new coach to (re)start his campaign – beat Nigeria in Nigeria.
South Africa defeated Nigeria 2-0 in their first match of the 2019 AFCON qualifier in Uyo. The Super Eagles after ages of camping put up a dismal and toothless performance in Uyo as Rantie struck again. Remember him? He was the reason we missed the 2015 AFCON. I mean he scored twice in that final match before Sone Aluko saved Nigeria’s blushes.
It was a poor display that showed lack of experience in Rohr’s side. From the goalie to the front man – deadite. Iheanacho should get a club where he can play. Jesus is alive in Manchester. We need to commit Ikeme and Balogun into the hands of the higher powers. Their injuries will cost us more. For once I miss Mikel.
And then, Nigeria had no balls. Can it be worse? First Rivers United. Now Super Eagles. Is Nigeria cursed? We have been running on a spot for ages. Gosh. Thank goodness it is the first game. We have 5 more. Libya walloped Seychelles 5-1 in the other match of the group.
The charged atmosphere was doused by NPFL actions on Sunday. Enyimba FC moved into continental places after a 2-1 victory over siblings Abia Warriors. The win took them to third. Mfon Udoh scored his 39th & 40th league goal for the Elephants.
The biggest result was in Jos. League leaders thrashed Gombe United 5-1 to remain 5 points clear at the top. Will the trophy return to Jos after being away since the first ever top flight season? There was a 94th heart break in Portharcourt as FC IfeanyiUbah lost 2-1 to Rivers United. Remo Stars have moved one spot and have been replaced by Shooting Stars.
The weekend was rounded up with a novelty game between Team Lagos and Team Nigeria in celebration of Lagos At 50. Team Lagos won 3-2 with players like Micheal Babatunde, Nnamdi Oduamadi, Obafemi Martins et al featuring.
On the Arsenal front, it seems Sanchez have agreed a three year deal and our plea for Szczesny may pay off. Ramsey scored a penanka and Chamberlain was on song too.
It will be a long break. Next season is about 60 days away.
Time to fly away
