With the guns left in the armoury and the gunners away on holidays, all attention was shifted ti the FIFA matches be it the Confederation cup or the Worldcup qualifiers. In Nigeria, the Nigeria Professional Football League continues and gets to the mid-season while the Federation Cup looms with mouth watery clashes.
Every team in Brazil for the Confederation cup has played at least a game and there have been no draws but outright wins for 4 teams. After the 1st round of matches Brazil and Nigeria lead their respective groups with goal difference with Italy and Spain second respctively.
Neymar and the Brazilians made Kagawa and his Japanese colleages look unserious. Neymar, Paulinho and Jo gave the Brazilians a 3-0 win. Pirlo’s freekick and Balotelli’s die-hard goal gifted the Italian Azzuris a 2-1 win over Mexico. Chicharito scored from the spot earlier on to level the tie. Spain won Uruguay 2-1 with Suarez’s freekick the highlight of the game thou a consolation to the Copa America Champions.
Nigeria, yes, the Super Eagles despite their jetlag after arriving 36 hours before teh kick off against Tahiti sent 6 past the OFC champions. Nnamdi Oduamadi’s hattrick with two owngoals from the Tahitians and one from Echijile was enough to make the game a practice match for the Eagles. I was not impressed with Chelsea’s Mikel Obi nor CSKA’s Ahmed Musa. they were below par. Nevertheless, we have the 3 points inthe kitty and we play Uruguay on Thursday. a win would take us to the semifinals.
As for our darling Arsenal, we are yet to see any new face and Higuan looks like he is set to come in. I hate to talk about transfers and thus I have set my mind till the 1st day of September to look at the team. I would follow the rumours and hope Wenger gets the right players so we can win trophies.
Next season starts on the 17th of August 2013 and if we must win a trophy, we must beat Aston Villa at the Emirates.
While the Arsenal are at rest, why not support the African champions. Dont be surprised when Nigeria wins the FIFA Confederation cup for 2013. dreaming? watch out.
