The international break was exciting especially with Nigeria getting 4 points from Cameroon over two legs in the quest to be in Russia next year. Alex Iwobi missed the party but Zambia are trying to make it a bit longer for the Super Eagles. Till October, we wait.
League football returned with mixed feelings about Arsenal and how the transfer window had fared. The bitter taste of the 4-0 defeat was still fresh despite two weeks of break. It didn’t matter as Arsenal defeated AFC Bournemouth 3-0 at the Emirates with a brace from Danny Welbeck and a goal from Lacazette.
Finally – A clean sheet!!!
Arsenal kept their first clean sheet of the season after conceding in their three previous matches. The Gunners conceded 3 at home to Leicester, 1 at Stoke and 4 at Anfield. It was bad business relying on an Arsenal defender in the FPL but Petr Cech and his defenders made sure the trend stopped. The goal was almost breached towards the end of the game but Cech palmed it away. Will the clean sheet continue?
Danny “Fall” Welbeck
When Perez was loaned out and Welbeck left behind at Arsenal, there were outcries from different section of the fans. Fondly, Welbeck has a way of making an easy goal look difficult by always doing it the hard way. His first goal against the Cherries had him nodding and shouldering the ball into goal before falling to the ground. I had expected him to fall as he scored his second but he wheeled away in ecstasy. He doesn’t need to make it difficult. Arsenal need to make it easier.
Upsurge and Better
I looked at the table and the Gunners have risen to the 11th spot, behind Newcastle on Goal Difference and 4 points behind Manchester United at the top. The Red Devils were held 2-2 by Stoke in a ground the Gunners lost 1-0. Arsenal played better than at Stoke and would have added to their goals tally. Will this be the beginning of a good run? Even Coquelin almost got his 1st Arsenal goal but he mysteriously left injured.
In other news, Manchester City white washed Liverpool 5-0 at the Etihad with Chamberlain among the Reds. The England international switched to Liverpool just before the close of the Transfer window. Alexis Sanchez had to make do with the bench despite almost leaving to City on Transfer Deadline Day. Has Lemar agreed to join in January?
The Europa League is next. Bring on Cologne.
