Arsenal lost 3-0 at the Etihad in their first since the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic. David Luiz’s 25 minutes disatrous display ensures Manchester City came out victorious.

David Luiz sent off at the Etihad

After 100 days of hiatus, the Premier League returned. First at Villa Park where Sheffield United were denied of victory. HawkEye and VAR combined to ensure the game ended 0-0 against host Aston Villa.

The onus of the first goal post lockdown fell to Etihad and David Luiz ensures he was an architect to it. Subbed on for injured Mari, Luiz reacted lazily to a Kevin De Bruyne pass. His deflection didn’t stop the pass from getting to Sterling for the opener.

It was just before the break. The game looked set to end goalless at the break until that disaster from the former PSG and Chelsea defender.

3 minutes after the restart, David Luiz was called upon by disaster. He answered the call, bringing Jesus down in the box. He was shown and KDB converted, nailing Arsenal’s fate to the cross. Foden made it 3-0 later on.

De Bruyne makes it 2-0 to City

Injuries to Granit Xhaka and Pablo Mari limited Arteta’s options from the bench. David Luiz was expected left on the bench following his poor performance in the friendly against Brentford. Ozil was left out of the team.

The loss dents Arsenal’s hope of finishing in the Champions League places but will need to do better if they are feature in Europe next season.

For the reigning English champions, the win only delays the inevitable – the relinquishing of the title to Liverpool.

It was a dark night for David Luiz and Arsenal. It is very unlikely that his contract will be renewed. The business from Chelsea has not paid off.

Mike Arteta has a lot of work to do.
