Few days ago, Lionel Messi’s tears struck the heart of football fans across the universe as he bade Barcelona goodbye.
It was not in front a full capacity Camp Nou crowd but a conference room with a selected few. After 21 years, Barcelona’s greatest player wasn’t given a sendforth on the pitch.
Barcelona could have done better. I believe it wasn’t managed properly. They had the chance to make profit at the beginning of last season if Messi was sold. Now they can’t register him for the season for reasons related to finance.
Now Messi has joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. He signed a two-year deal with an option for a third that will net him an annual salary of $41 million plus bonuses. It is reported that the Argentine received a sign-on fee of $30 million.
The 34 year old will join fellow South American and ex-Barcelona player – Neymar in PSG. He will also play alongside ex-Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos. I hope he doesn’t tackle him in trainings.
Messi has won FIFA’s player of the year award and the European Golden Shoe a record 6 times and departed Barcelona after two decades in which he contributed 672 goals in all competition and won 34 trophies.
What if Messi joined a Premier League side? Abrahamovic wanted him at Chelsea but I hear he reacted late. But would Messi had considered Chelsea? What of Manchester City and a reunion with Pep? They seem like the clubs can match Messi’s wage demand.
Could Messi have gone to Manchester United or Liverpool? Playing for Ole or Klopp for a traditional English side.
Er… what of Arsenal? Would Messi assist Arsenal in winning the Premier League? Could he have solved Arteta’s problems? Would Arteta expect high defensive output from Messi? blah…blah..blah… er. forgive my dreams.
Messi is in Paris now. Now the world will rest as the new season rolls in. Sit back and enjoy the best of the living legend.
