2020/21 NPFL Champions Akwa United have been knocked out of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League.
The Uyo based side were defeated 2-1 on aggregate after losing 2-0 to Algerian Champions CR Belouizdad in Algiers. The 1-0 win in Uyo a week were overturned by the Algerians.
Hichem Khalfallah’s 72nd minute free kick skipped beyond Adewale Adeyinka in goal for the opener before the referee awarded a penalty after Ubong Friday brought down an Algerian in the box. Chemseddine Nessakh converted the 84th minute penalty to secure victory for the home side.
It was a short Champions League experience for Akwa United who will now look forward to the beginning of the new NPFL season to defend their title.
Nigeria’s second rep to the Champions League defeated Young Africans SC 1-0 at the Adokiye Amasiemeka Stadium in Port Harcourt. The win completed a 1-0 double and 2-0 aggregate over the Tanzanians. Uche Onwuasonaya scored the only goal in the game.
Young Africans will be weary of Nigerian clubs as they are yet to secure a win after 6 attempts, losing the last 4 – P6 W0 D2 L4.
Rivers United will now face Al-Hilal of Sudan for a place in the group stage of the Champions League.
In the Confederation Cup, Bayelsa United defeated Ashanti Golden Boys of Guinea 4-2 at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenegoa. The AITEO Cup winners led 3-0 at half-time in the one-legged tie.
Okardi Inikurogha got a brace while Favour Martins and Emo James had their names on the scoresheet.
Bayelsa United will face CS Sfaxien (Tunisia)in the next round while Enyimba FC will play Dimabars of Senegal.
