Arsenal began their Europa League campaign of the season with a 2-1 win at FC Zurich with goals from Marquinhos and Nketiah.
Arteta expectedly made wholesome changes to the XI that lost 3-1 to Manchester United on Sunday. Marquinhos and Turner were handed their their debuts while Fabio Vieira had his full debut.
Starting XI: Turner, Tierney, Gabriel, Holding, Tomiyasu, Lokonga, Xhaka, Vieira, Martinelli, Marquinhos, Nketiah.
Marquinhos opened the scoring in the 16th minute, latching unto a low cross from Eddie Nketiah from the left. Fabio Vieira had the pre-assist for the goal after his pass from Arsenal’s half found Nketiah.
Arsenal dominated play (75%) and could have penetrated more but the Gunners conceded a corner kick just before half time. The home side converted (1-1).
The teams had a moment of silence on the pitch after receiving the news that Queen Elizabeth passed on. May her soul rest in peace.
The second have started like the first half started. In the 62nd minute, Eddie Nketiah made amend for the penalty. He rose highest to nod in the winner from a Marquinhos’ cross. Relief.
Odegaard, Zinchenko, Saka and Gabriel Jesus had some minutes in the game. Jesus almost got the third. The home side fought for an equalizer but the visitors held on to the win.
In other Europa League news, Manchester United lost 1-0 to Real Sociedad. It is a first victory for the Spanish side over an English side.
