The Opening ceremony was beautiful – the songs, display and organisation. Nice to see Shakira do it again in another World Cup. Burna Boy also shared the stage in that colourful ceremony.
The first 2 matches of the World Cup were played “Yesterday” in Mexico. Hosts Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 while Korea came from behind to get all 3 points against Czech Republic.

The Opening match recorded 3 red cards, one less than the total number of red cards recorded in all of the matches played in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Two of red cards were shown to the Bafana Bafana – one for denying a goal scoring opportunity and the other for malicious intent. Mexico failed to capitalise on the extra men on the pitch and eventually had a man down in added time.
Julian Quinones scored the opener in the 9th minute after Sithole failed to manage a pass from GK Williams. Raul Jimenez doubled the lead in the 67th minute to secure 3 points to the El Tri.
It was a great victory for Mexico, who sit at the top of the table. It was a good victory to as many Africans supporting Mexico for the night. Did you see the Quinones celebration? Remember Tshabalala?

South Africa’s display sent me pondering how the Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to qualify for this World Cup. All 3 coaches within the qualifying period had their share of blame but the last straw was failing to win Zimbabwe in Uyo.
Back to North America, the World Cup continues today with another opening ceremony in Toronto where hosts Canada will take on Bosnia & Herzegovina. The US would also begin their quest against Paraguay at the Los Angeles Stadium.
Three opening ceremonies? You don’t want to miss anyone.
Predictions: Canada 1-1 Bosnia; USA 2-1 Paraguay.
