Folarin Balogun scored a first half brace as the United States defeated Paraguay 4-1 in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup.

Few years ago, Flo had the option of playing for England, Nigeria or the US. He chose the US and he has been impressive for them. The US forced a 7th minute own goal before Balogun sent a touch finish into the net for his 1st in the 31st minute.

His 2nd goal was beautiful, curling the ball into the top left corner. Paraguay pulled one back but Reyna made it 4-1 with a unique finish.

Earlier, Canada needed a 78th minute equalizer from Cyle Larin to get a point in their opener. The Bosnians led by former Arsenal man Kolasinac took the lead in 21st minute from a corner before the home side turned the screw with numerous chances.

Two of those chances were cleared off the line and Bosnia could have been 2-0 up in the 2nd half but for the save made by the goalie.

The Opening ceremony at the Toronto stadium wasn’t as colourful as that of Mexico City. I am yet to watch that of the United States.

There is the matter of Thomas Partey denied entry into Canada, the belief that Portugal would win the World Cup and the pondering of South African goalie Williams on the lack of support from other African countries.

For Day 3, Qatar play Switzerland in San Francisco, Brazil play Morocco in New Jersey, Haiti play Scotland in Boston while Australia take on Turkey in Vancouver.

Watch North America matches from the motherland requires midnight and early morning alertness. I will be looking out for my Arsenal players in Brazil.

Predictions: Qatar 0-2 Switzerland, Brazil 3-1 Morocco, Haiti 0-3 Scotland, Australia 1-1 Turkey.
