Last night, Bayern Munich had the opportunity to turn around a 1-0 first leg defeat to Atletico Madrid in the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League. Alonso’s deflected free kick ruffled Simeone’s feathers in the 31st minute, took away Oblak’s clean sheet and seemed to have started an avalanche that could have buried the Rojiblancos.
Minutes later, Oblak was the hero as he saved Thomas Muller’s spot kick after a foul in the box. No one was more relieved than Augusto Fernandez the Uruguayan defender who fouled Alaba for the free kick and Javi Martinez for the penalty.
Torres and Griezmann combined to give Atletico a valuable away goal after the restart before Lewandowski scored his 9th goal of this season’s Champions League. But it was not enough. Atletico even had the luxury of missing a penalty in the 83rd minute but they held on to the aggregate victory to progress to the final.
Tonight, they will be joined by either Manchester City or Real Madrid. The Spaniards were without Ronaldo in the first leg that ended 0-0 in Manchester. Can the Portuguese star steer Zidane’s men to the final? Will Iheanacho feature?
In the Nigeria Professional Football League, Kano Pillars will host reigning champions Enyimba at the Sani Abacha Stadium. Can Enyimba get a good result today? They have lost 4 home points this season and won their last away game this season. There is a match review on ThatEnyimbaFan.
Giwa FC risks being expelled from the NPFL after failing to show up for the Matchday 14 fixture against Wikki Tourists. Wikki Tourists have been awarded 3 points and 3 goals. If Giwa FC misses their next match to Abia Warriors by the weekend, they will be thrown out of the league with all initial results counted as null and void. Ambassador Chris Giwa and Giwa FC will need to act positively to avoid such embarrassment. Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah emerged the Chairman of Anambra State FA. The methodology is questionable and the news is hilarious.
To some Arsenal matters, Cazorla, Rosicky and Chambers were in action for the Gunners as the U21 defeated Blackburn in the semifinal of the playoffs. Hopefully we see Rosicky one more time at the Emirates before he sums up his Arsenal career.
The boss is here.
I am backing Atletico to lift the trophy this season.
